What to do near the Residence

Ostia, overlooking Rome's coastline, offers experiences of remarkable beauty that rival those of the Capital itself.
Among the ruins of Ostia Antica, one of Italy's most evocative archaeological sites, you can embark on a true journey through time.

The seafront hosts cultural events, water sports, live music and a lively food scene. Ostia is where history, nature and entertainment blend effortlessly, proving that unforgettable moments can also be found just beyond Rome's city centre.

As its name suggests (from ostium, "mouth"), the ancient city of Ostia owes its existence to the proximity of the Tiber and the sea. Indeed, before the flood of 1557, the river's course was very different from its current course, skirting the northern edge of the town, while now it only touches a short stretch to the west. The sea,...

Chigi Castle

The Chigi Castle, also known as Villa Chigi-Sacchetti, is a fortified villa nestled within the urban park of the Pineta di Castel Fusano.
Built between 1624 and 1629 at the request of Cardinal Giulio Cesare Sacchetti and designed by Pietro da Cortona, the villa follows a square plan, punctuated by towers.

In 1623, Cardinal Giulio Cesare Sacchetti commissioned the architect Pietro da Cortona to design a villa along with its accompanying decorative frescoes. Construction took place between November 1624 and 1629.

In 1755, the estate and its castle were acquired by the Chigi family.
Toward the end of the 19th century, Cardinal Sigismondo Chigi had the basoli of the Via Severiana extracted to adorn the avenue leading from the villa to the sea. These paving stones were later restored in the 20th century through the initiative of the archaeologist Rodolfo Lanciani.

In 1888, the Chigi family rented the castle to King Umberto I of Savoy, while in 1932 the Governorate of Rome purchased the estate from Prince Francesco Chigi, who retained ownership of the villa and 33 hectares of land.

The interiors are adorned with frescoes, created under Pietro da Cortona's direction, celebrating the surrounding natural landscape. Among the principal artists are Pietro da Cortona himself, as well as Andrea Sacchi and Alessandro Salucci.

Presidential Estate of Castel Porziano

Castel Porziano is one of the three official residences of the President of the Italian Republic. Located just outside Rome, the estate spans nearly 15,000 acres of extraordinary natural beauty, where pine forests, open fields, and the nearby coastline create a serene and majestic landscape.

At its heart lies a small historic village, a museum, a chapel and the elegant Castello Grazioli, surrounded by forests, dunes and wildlife.
The estate is home to wild boars, deer, fallow deer, roe deer and a wide range of mammals and birdlife, roaming freely through oak woods, pine forests and Mediterranean scrub.

Guided visits can be booked well in advance via the official website:https://palazzo.quirinale.it/residenze/c_porziano.html

Lipu Mediterranean Habitat Centre

Located at the mouth of the Tiber River, near Ostia's Idroscalo, this extraordinary nature reserve was created on land once occupied by an open-air landfill, known in Italy as the site where the Italian writer, poet and film maker Pier Paolo Pasolini was murdered in the 1970s.

Originally proposed as an alternative to a devastating oceanarium—a kind of "zoo-lager" that would have destroyed the entire Tiber estuary—the reserve came to life after a difficult battle led by the Ostia branch of LIPU in the mid-1990s. It was later integrated by public authorities into the new Tourist Harbour of Rome, serving an important role in environmental mitigation and compensation.

Today, it is a thriving wetland ecosystem hosting over 200 bird species, including rare nesting birds. A peaceful haven where nature has reclaimed its space — and where silence, water and wings create a unique harmony.

Castle of Julius II & the Village of Ostia Antica

The Castle of Julius II, also known as the Rocca of Ostia, is a medieval fortress located at the southwestern edge of the village of Ostia Antica, within the territory of Rome.

The site is owned by the Ministry of Culture and managed by the Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica.
The fortress has a triangular layout, with three towers at its corners—two circular and one larger polygonal tower (the Tower of Martin V)—connected by a single wall walk. It was originally surrounded by a moat fed by the Tiber River.

The castle's walls are entirely made of brick: low but thick and sloped (battered) to reduce damage from perpendicular impacts of siege engines. Artillery positions were formed by openings known as troniere, located in the recess between the wall walk and the curtain wall, often positioned close to the ground.
From the castle, walls once extended to form a quadrilateral, protecting the few buildings immediately nearby. Among them were three rows of houses in front of the castle and the Basilica of Sant'Aurea, assigned to high-ranking ecclesiastical personnel. While the houses still stand, the walls no longer exist.
These features make the castle an important example of late 15th-century transitional fortifications, marking the shift toward modern-style military architecture.

Ostia Antica Riverside Park

A natural and cultural experience where the discovery of Rome's river meets the millennia-old history of the surrounding land. This one-and-a-half-acre park at water level offers an unforgettable walk through the Tiber's biodiversity, with benches, picnic areas, terraced steps, scenic viewpoints, and a dock for boats arriving from central Rome—bringing together nature, tourism, and sustainable mobility.

Inaugurated on May 17, 2025, the third of five riverfront parks along the Tiber—created by Roma Capitale with Jubilee funds—is a place designed to be lived in close contact with nature.
Ideal for restorative walks, cycling, or simply enjoying a unique panorama, the park lies directly alongside the archaeological remains of the Ostia Antica Archaeological Park. It has significantly expanded access to the area while establishing a protected natural reserve, thanks to an ecosystem of exceptional ecological quality.

Visitors and residents alike can immerse themselves in nature by following a new circular pedestrian and cycling path stretching over 700 metres, enriched with scenic rest areas overlooking the river landscape.

The park's already thriving ecosystem has been further enhanced with the planting of more than 300 new trees and over 550 aromatic and ornamental plants—including roses, bay laurel, lavender, sage, and rosemary. Invasive species have been reduced to encourage the growth of native riverine flora, such as ferns, reed beds, and hygrophilous woodland.

The Ostia Antica Riverside Park is also a haven for those who seek nature at a slower pace. Here, visitors may observe a remarkably rich and diverse wildlife in its natural habitat. Mammals include foxes, porcupines, weasels, hares, wild boar, and roe deer. Birdlife—both nesting and migratory—features red herons, marsh harriers, water rails, bitterns, little grebes, ferruginous ducks, and northern shovelers. Among reptiles, water turtles and tortoises can also be spotted.

The park can be reached either via Via Gherardo or through its internal dock.

Castel Fusano Pinewood

A protected natural area of 2260 acres, home to Mediterranean vegetation and important archaeological remains.
The area encompasses a vast pine forest, home to species typical of the Mediterranean ecostystem, as well as sites of significant historical and archaeological interest.

Among them are the Villa della Palombara, Villa Chigi, and the remains of a stretch of the ancient Via Severiana. The pinewood is divided into two sections by Via Cristoforo Colombo. To the northwest it is bordered by the Canale dei Pescatori, while to the southeast it adjoins the presidential estate of Castelporziano.

Adventure Park

Be Wild Park is a multifunctional outdoor space located on Via di Castel Fusano, between Via del Mare and Via Cristoforo Colombo, set within an area of around 49 acres of remarkable historical and natural value, close to the archaeological remains of Ostia Antica.

The park features a variety of installations designed for outdoor and experiential activities. Among them is the Sky Frame, an elevated structure on poles where group activities take place at height, alongside a suspended course and a 120-metre zipline. Rising from the ground is a climbing tower, while throughout the park several permanent installations are used for experiential training in nature (Outdoor Training).

In the open areas free of trees, even large groups can take part in classic problem-solving and team-building activities, supported by all the necessary equipment. This space also includes an Obstacle Trail with high-level challenges and a dedicated Battlefield area for simulated combat using electronic equipment.

The park's "savannah" area, covering approximately 37 acres, offers facilities for archery, a zone dedicated to hut-building, and an orienteering course using maps and compass.

Be Wild Park is fully equipped to host participants throughout the day, with covered structures featuring tables and a kitchen, additional outdoor tables and benches, as well as wooden restrooms and changing rooms—making it an ideal setting for immersive experiences in close contact with nature. https://www.bewildroma.it/

Borghetto dei Pescatori

The Borghetto dei Pescatori – Fishermen village - , nestled along the Canale dei Pescatori between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the pine forest of Castel Fusano, was first settled in 1890 by fishermen from Naples.
To these families, the Pia Associazione di San Nicola of the Basilica of Bari donated a statue of Saint Nicholas of Bari—the patron saint of fishermen—carved from Trani marble.

Between 1919 and 1928, a small church dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari was built. Later, in 1931, with the construction of the seaside promenade and the demolition of the fishermen's shacks, the community risked being forced back to their places of origin. It was thanks to the intervention of the writer Margherita Sarfatti that six distinctive two-storey red houses were built, allowing the settlement to survive. The Borghetto was officially inaugurated on April 4, 1932.

To this day, the village retains the timeless charm of a traditional fishing hamlet. Each year, between late August and early September, it comes alive with the Sagra della Tellina, a beloved local festival dedicated to the tellina clam. Organised by the extraordinary residents of the Borghetto, the festival draws locals, visitors, and passionate food lovers eager to enjoy this prized shellfish—most famously served with spaghetti.

One of the most moving moments of the celebration is the evocative boat procession featuring the Madonna Stella Maris, protector of fishermen, which travels from the Stagno canal to the Ostia Pier. This ritual marks the traditional "Marriage with the Sea", an ancient religious ceremony symbolising a sacred bond between the fisherman and the sea, invoked through a symbolic union with the Madonna.

The Lesser-Known Rome

There are places in the Eternal City that remain largely untouched by the crowds of tourists who flock to its most famous monuments—places worth discovering to catch a glimpse of a more authentic, lived-in Rome.

Garbatella District

Garbatella is one of Rome's most beloved, distinctive, and charming neighbourhoods—architecturally significant, perhaps rivalled only by the Coppedè district.

It is a source of genuine Roman pride, often described as the most beautiful working-class neighbourhood in the world. Those who truly know Rome can only agree. The reason is simple: Garbatella embodies romanità—the very soul of Rome—and continues to preserve it to this day.

Always forward-looking, with its lively cafés and nightlife spots, Garbatella never loses sight of its past. On Sunday mornings, you can still smell freshly laundered clothes drying in the open air and the rich aromas of sauces slowly simmering for a family lunch. History unfolds along its walls.

The architecture of its buildings is more than a century old: workers' housing blocks where a close-knit community continues to proudly claim and protect its identity—without compromise.

Coppedè District

In the heart of Rome lies one of the city's most distinctive and unexpected areas.
A corner of the Eternal City with whimsical and surprising features, where Liberty and Art Deco styles blend with echoes of Greek, Gothic, Baroque, and even medieval architecture. Welcome to the Coppedè District.

Strictly speaking, Coppedè is not a neighbourhood in the traditional sense, but rather a unique architectural complex located within the Trieste district, in the Nomentana area, between Piazza Buenos Aires and Via Tagliamento. It unfolds around its central heart, Piazza Mincio.

The area takes its name from architect Gino Coppedè, who designed it between 1915 and 1927.

What makes this part of Rome truly special is its unmistakably unconventional architecture. Among marble façades, loggias, decorative details, arches, and small towers, visitors find themselves wandering through buildings that evoke Liberty style, Baroque grandeur, and, at times, even medieval architecture—creating a dreamlike urban landscape unlike any other in the city.

Rione San Saba

Just a short walk from the famous Circus Maximus, nestled between the Baths of Caracalla, the Pyramid of Cestius, and the Aventine Hill, lies the Rione of San Saba—often called the "Little Aventine."
A true hidden gem in the heart of Rome, it is an oasis of peace and history set within the vibrant and often chaotic pulse of the Eternal City.

Established in 1921, this district unfolds across an area rich in layers of the past, spanning from ancient Rome through the medieval period and into modern times. Within just over one square kilometre, it is home to nearly 3,400 residents.

Today, San Saba is inhabited largely by a middle and upper-middle class community, a marked contrast to the working-class families who lived here in the late 19th century and throughout the first three decades of the 20th century.
